Area Information
The Organjewoud is on the eastern edge of the town Heerenveen. Golden Tulip Tjaarda Oranjewoud hotel is right in the middle of the forest. Here Friesland’s many interconnected rivers, canales and lakes offer the chance of boating and windsurfing for water sports enthusiasts. It’s a nice place for nature lovers. Recreation Activities:
Sailing:
Friesland is known for its water. You can sail on the Frisian lakes and canals, the Yssel lake, the Waddensea (the sea between Friesland and the islands) or the North Sea. Possibly the greatest attraction during the summer is 'Skûtsjesilen', a sailing competition of large, old wooden boats ('Skûtsje').
Swimming:
One of the main holiday activities is swimming. Not just in one of the many commercial swimming pools, but also in the lakes, canals and the sea. The quality of the seawater is also very good, which attracts a lot of swimmers every summer.
Sunbathing
You can go out in your bathing suit and lie down on the dykes to enjoy the sun and get a tan, and take a plunge in the water if you wish to do so.
Fishing
Here you can either take your fishing rod and sit on the banks of a lake or a canal, or you can sign up for a sea-fishing trip on a boat on the Yssel lake, the Waddensea or the North Sea.
Football:
Heerenveen's stadium is named after Friesland's eternal football hero: Abe Lenstra. The Abe Lenstrastadium has a capacity of 14.400 covered seats of which about 600 are reserved for guest supporters. The European and world speedskating championships have been held here and the stadium is also home to the Heerenveen ice hockey side, The Flyers.
